How to Design an OMR Sheet Online (Free, Step-by-Step)

Designing an OMR sheet used to mean fighting with Word tables or paying a printer for a custom layout. What makes a good OMR sheet design?

Before you start, it helps to know what an optical mark reader actually needs. A well-designed OMR sheet has four essential ingredients:

  • Bubble grids — evenly spaced circles (A, B, C, D…) that respondents fill in. Spacing and bubble size must stay consistent so a scanner can find each mark.
  • Timing marks — the black rectangles along the edge that let a scanner track each row.
  • Registration / corner marks — anchors that tell the scanner how the page is oriented and scaled.
  • Student information fields — name, roll number, class, and a booklet/set code so each sheet maps to a person.
